Evony – Free Forever!

The world of gaming has changed much over the decades. From the start it was consoles such as the Nintendo, the Atari, all the way up to our new generation consoles such as the PS3 and 360. Computers have always been on the forefront of gaming, buying and installing games is a  task all gamers know well. Lately however, a new generation of gaming has emerged. Games that do not require several gigs of memory, they only require you to have an internet browser. Earlier in this year of 2009, a new game was born on the web. I speak of Evony.com

Evony is a strategy based game in which you can build your own cities in any way you see fit. The timeline of the game puts it somewhere roughly in the early ages back when ancient Rome was still in power. You can raise a powerful army to sweep your enemies from the face of the world. You can join alliances and receive aid, as well as give it if needed. Did I mention that all this you do with other real people playing?

This new massively multiplayer online game has a new player friendly tutorial of quests that guide beginners in just how to properly construct an empire and their very own loyal force of warriors and archers. As your society grows you will be able to research new technologies that allow your archers to shoot from further away, your units to have significantly more health or even speed up the building time of your constructions.

Other than just building, you are competing with tens of thousands of other players across the globe. The ranking system has a few different modes. There is prestige, which ranks you based on your accomplishments such as winning battles against NPC’s, building structures, researching technologies and even training soldiers will raise this. The more aggressive ranking statistic is called Honor. This goes up when you are successful at either attacking an enemy, or defending your city against an attack.

I do not want to give too much about this game away for all those gamers out there, but I will say that Evony is unique in more than just it’s game play. It is very well maintained, in fact every night it is checked for any errors. This keeps the game lag-free and running great. Evony also boasts a dedicated staff that promptly respond to errors as well as a Forum where players can seek help and advice from both moderators and more experienced players.

In any case, I urge anyone with some spare time to try this game out. It really is the best of its kind you could ever hope to find. Hope to see you on the battlefield!

I no longer play this game as i lost interest in it over a year ago. **7/17/2010** To all the people who have posted comments saying “evony sucks” or “its gay”, i think everyone fucking knows. so stop posting those kinds of comments. Thanks. Evony is a online RTS (real-time strategy game) the objective is to build buildings, but to build things, you must research something first, or make and upgrade, to find out what upgrade you need, you simply hover over the upgrade button on the selected building and it will tell you. Pros – Friendly community -Lots of features -Doesn’t require a lot of your time to play, 10 to 15 minutes a day is good -Browser Based, no download needed -Easy to play -7-day beginners protection when you start playing Cons -2D graphics -upgrades take a long time, and if you dont have something else to do while your waiting, it gets really boring. -you need speakers (items that allow you to chat) to talk on the world channel. -you can get attacked even when you’re offline -slow loading time (if you have an older computer, or dial-up connection. overall good game. My rating- 7.5/10

Evony

This new online real time strategy game has taken the world by storm with its cunning game play, quest based reward system and interactive chat systems. Being a personal fan of online RTS games I have come across some good games in my time, but none compare to Evony.

‘Tribal Wars’, another online RTS, was one worth playing. In the sense of game play, both Evony and ‘Tribal Wars’ were both very alike and were about building an empire and conquering others with military campaigns. However inter-player interaction in ‘Tribal Wars’ was very limited to simple e-mails. Whereas in Evony each player has the option of having chat rooms for instant messaging between players.

Another thing that ‘Tribal Wars’ was missing that Evony has is the beginners protection options. In Evony, as you may or may not know, when you create an account, you get a seven days grace so to speak. It basically means that for seven days after you create an account no one can attack you. But in tribal wars you are vulnerable right from the second you create an account. That makes it very hard to get started with every one attacking you.

One feature I found really unique to Evony is that it has a speed up system. This is where if the project takes under 5 mins you can instantly build it. But never fear, for those long projects you can buy/win a guideline to decrease the time of a project for up to 8 hours. Finally an RTS were you don’t actually have to wait three hours for a barracks.

Anyway enough about ‘Tribal Wars’ here is a quick run through of some of the Features of Evony, don’t worry I’m not going repeat any of the ones above. First is the amulet system, every day as a daily quest you get given an amulet just for logging in. then you can play the Wheel of Fortune so to speak. Most of the time you get something that’s worth about ten times more than your amulet.

You also get a choice of over 100 different servers to play in, hundreds of quests, an almost endless supply of men and buildings to create. Even the graphics are actually really good. Believe it or not they show your villagers building your projects. I think the only bad thing I can find is the loading time, but my internet is the slowest on the earth so you shouldn’t need to worry about that.

Oh and to wrap it up in gold foil, if you are willing to pay some cash they do have packs of ‘cents’ which you can use to buy some extraordinary items. All in all Evony is the best online RTS I’ve ever played and I look forward to playing it further. If you haven’t played it I suggest you do, cause it’s the next generation of RTS.
